Hello hello hello everyone! I hope you all are having a fantastic week so far. I don’t know about you all, but here in Texas it is currently COLD and CLOUDY outside. Who would have thought?!
This week, I want to talk to you all about something that you all know and love so much: social media. Oh yes, I’m talking about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, you name it. Anything that has to do with staying connected and talking with people through the internet. Now, I know most people use it the way social media is intended to be used, and that is to stay connected with friends as people move away, to share the cool things you have been doing, and to let out your witty side on Twitter (or attempt to like me). That is the way social media is meant to be used, and the reason it was created in the first place- in my opinion. Social media is in our lives so that we can stay up to date on our friends and family. And don’t get me wrong, I think social media is great and I absolutely have a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever else there is- I’ve got them all. BUT what alarmed me recently was I noticed that on almost every single one of those sites, there was at least a handful of posts (especially on Facebook and Twitter) that was directing negative comments towards someone else. No names were mentioned, but there were without a doubt things implied that were not necessarily the nicest things to share on the internet. These posts all contained messages to unnamed people saying things anywhere from “Oh, I bet you think you’re so cool…” to “Yea well no one likes you”. And to say the least, I was appalled. I could not believe that people were posting those sort of messages for the rest of their followers to see. It was AWFUL. People are sharing on social media comments towards others that are not meant for the rest of the people to see or should be anyone else’s business. It is heart-breaking to see that something that was meant to be beneficial and positive is being turned in a medium for gossiping and trash-talking others. it was very eye-opening.
I just want to encourage you all today to rise above the pressure to slander or trash-talk or gossip about someone on social media. That’s not what it is intended for and not how it should be used. It should be used for positive things and to share accomplishments in your life or fun things you have gotten to do. Don’t let it become an outlet for bashing others. I challenge you to not put anything on social media that you wouldn’t say to someone’s face directly. This way of using social media in a negative way is spreading like wild fire and if we can stop it here, there is no telling what we can achieve! You are all so great in every way and I just know that if you all can stop the malicious use of social media- your friends and everyone around you will follow.
I hope you have an awesome finish to the week everyone! Stay strong and don’t forget to do something that you LOVE this week. I’ll see you next week at the same time and place!
